Pupils lend their voice to celebrated brass band

The Batley Parish School Singing Group want to reinforce the long-standing relationship between their school and members of Hammonds Saltaire Brass Band.

For the past seven years the pupils have been applauded for their singing standards when they have joined the annual Christmas concert staged by the band, recently promoted to the top-ranking section of the British Open Brass Band Championships.

And they hope to repeat the approval when they join the bandsmen for the eighth year at the concert in the Batley Town Hall on Saturday December 6.

The relationship evolved through the friendship of music teacher Kate Delaney, her mother Jean, who provides the accompaniment, and two special members of the Brass Band hierarchy, conductor Morgan Griffiths of Gomersal and his Birstall-based father Ted Griffiths, the band’s publicity officer.

Kate said the kids, aged between seven and 11, really enjoy the rehearsal sessions and benefit from singing in front of an audience.

This year their programme of six numbers will include two items from the film Polar Express and Reach by S Club 7.
