Remembrance Day service details for North Kirklees

Remembrance Day services will be held across North Kirklees next month.

A host of events in the district will commemorate the sacrifices made by local soldiers from 1914-18 – which will be all the more poignant during WWI’s centenary year.

And the Mayor of Kirklees, Coun Ken Smith, has called on residents to support the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal.

He said: “I believe we owe our service personnel a great debt. They serve us and in return we should support them.Please be as generous as you can in support of this year’s Poppy Appeal.”

A number of events will be held around North Kirklees on Sunday, November 9.

In Batley, a procession will assemble in the Market Place at 10.15am, with a march at 10.35am to the War Memorial Gardens for a 10.55am service. After this, it will re-form in Cambridge Street and return to the town hall for refreshments.

In Birstall, residents should gather at the Carr Street and Market Street corner at 1.45 pm ready for setting off on the hour. A service will be held at St Peter’s Church at 2.20pm, with wreaths laid on the war memorial around 3pm.

In Dewsbury, the procession will assemble at the town hall at 10am, and set off 10 minutes later to the Minster for a 10.30am service. At 11.45am, Legion members will parade to Crow Nest Park war memorial for a wreath laying at 12.45pm. A bus will be provided for veterans not wishing to parade.

Those attending the Heckmondwike commemoration should gather at the war memorial in Green Park at 11.45am, ready for a service at noon.

In Mirfield, assemble at 1.30pm in Lowlands Road for a parade at 2pm to a wreath laying at the Ings Grove Park war memorial. The procession will then head to Lowlands Road for dismissal. Tea and Coffee will be served at the fire station, refreshments at Mirfield Constitutional Club, St Paul’s Road, and free hot food at The Old Colonial in Dunbottle Lane.

Cleckheaton residents should gather next to the town hall at 2pm. The parade sets off to Memorial Park at 2.15 pm to lay wreaths. It will then march to St John’s Church for a service at 2.45 pm.

On Sunday November 9, a short dedication to Birkenshaw War Memorial will take place in St Paul’s Church at 9.30am, with other commemorative events following. Various other services will be held around the district before and after Sunday November 9.

On Wednesday November 5, meet at Dewsbury Town Hall at 10.45am to progress to Longcauseway for a Dedication of Garden of Remembrance at 11am. For the Armistice Day Service – Tuesday November 11 – gather on Longcauseway at 10.50am for a brief commemoration on the hour.

In Cleckheaton on Monday November 3 a remembrance service will be held outside the town hall at 11am, with a Tuesday November 11 commemoration at Memorial Park also at 11 am.
