l Would-be bombers who plotted to bring death and destruction to the heart of Dewsbury were only caught after one of their cars was stopped for having no insurance.

The grim details of the plot to target an EDL rally in June last year were revealed as the group pleased guilty to preparing acts of terrorism at the Old Bailey. The six men were armed with sawn-off shotguns, machetes, a partially constructed pipe bomb and other weapons but arrived in Dewsbury after the demonstration had dispersed.

The weapons were found two days after the car had been impounded by police for having no insurance. Searches of the mens’ homes revealed documents addressed to the ‘enemies of Islam’, the Queena and David Cameron outlining their motivations against the EDL.

Jewel Uddin, 27, Omar Mohammed Khan, 31, and Zohaib Ahmed, 22, Mohammed Hasseen, 24, Anzal Hussain, 25, and Mohammed Saud, 23, were all jailed for more than 18 years.

l A teenager was abused by disgraced broadcaster Jimmy Savile at Dewsbury and District Hospital, it emerged.

The victim was just 15 years old when they were attacked by the prolific offender, but only reported the assault after the presenter died in October 2011. It was one of 28 cases of abuse by Savile at hospitals being investigated by West Yorkshire Police.

Hundreds of allegations of abuse have come to light as part of Scotland Yard’s investigation into Savile’s past, Operation Yewtree.

The main location of the hospital offences was Leeds General Infirmary, where Savile volunteered, and the Dewsbury Hospital abuse tool place 40 years ago.

Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs Dewsbury Hospital, said the it had reviewed its safeguarding policies since the allegations came to light.

The hospital is abuse is currently subject to an independent investigation by the Department of Health, which is examining allegations at 13 hospital trusts around the country.

l Thrilling regattas, spectacular dragon boat races and top athletes could soon be livening up Mirfield’s waterways.

Plans were unveiled to transform a stretch of the Calder into a bustling base for a brand new watersports climb.

Pennine Canoe and Rowing Club chairman David Jeffries said: “The river is a lovely place. It’s a real facility that in this part of the world we have forgotten about. It’s something we could get a lot out of as a community.

“It will be a great sporting opportunity.”

The club wants to put a jetty and clubhouse behind industrial units near the railway station car park. It then hopes to get people of all ages involved in watersports and host events to bring hundred of people to the town.

Mirfield Town Council passed a motion supporting the plans.
