The seventh annual Spirit festival took place in front of Dewsbury Town Hall, featuring a lights show and cyclists suspended 40ft in mid-air. The cycling theme was chosen to celebrate the Tour de France coming to Kirklees.

Plans were unveiled for Heckmondwike’s bus hub shortly after it received the green light from Kirklees Council’s planning department. Work began in the autumn and council leader David Sheard said he hoped it would be completed in early 2015. The building will combine the scattered bus stops around Heckmondwike green into a sheltered area.

A boy delivered a baby on his way to school – for a mum who didn’t even know she was pregnant. Ruwais Khan, 16, was on his way to Castle Hall Academy when he heard the screams of a woman in labour in Flash Lane, Mirfield. The youngster, along with a nurse passing by, helped deliver baby Lilly.

The Kirklees Conservatives suggested putting Batley and Birstall under the control of different wards in their local election manifesto. The party suggested Batley West and East wards join with Dewsbury’s three wards, and Birstall would form part of a Greater Spenborough locality. Under the proposals, more of the cash raised through council tax and business rates would be spent in the districts.
