Owner Tesco was in talk with potential buyers after it pulled out of a plan to build a new store on the site.

The Health Secretary rejected a bid to stop the downgrading of Dewsbury’s A&E department. Jeremy Hunt was asked to examine the deeply unpopular plan by councillors – but he took just 16 days to back the Mid Yorkshire Hospital NHS Trust’s plan to centralise services at Pinderfields in Wakefield.

Labour leader Ed Miliband paid tribute to Batley and Spen MP Mike Wood after he had announced his retirement following the next general election. By that time he will have served his constituency for 18 years. Mr Miliband said: “He is a man with Labour values at his core.”

Monks at the Community of the Resurrection were rejoicing after a £500,000 project was given the green light. Plans to bring the amphitheatre at the site back into use were unanimously accepted by the Heavy Woollen planning sub-committee.
