Sewage works plan could net Spen 1,000 new jobs claims developer

Keyland Developments, a sister-company to Yorkshire Water, has unveiled plans for an industrial park on the 57-acre former North Bierley water treatment works site near Chain Bar Roundabout.

A public exhibition will take place today in Woodlands Cricket Club, Oakenshaw for any member of the public to take a look at the plans. Keyland said it is preparing to submit a planning application to Kirklees Council to create 500,000 square feet of employment space in industrial and distribution uses.

A statement from Keyland said the plans would have “significant contribution to the economic regeneration of the locality.”

Peter Garrett, managing director of Keyland, said; “The chronic shortage of quality industrial accommodation within the region has been well documented and the creation of this new park is intended to address that and also deliver a significant number of new jobs and expansion opportunities to the local area.

“The North Bierley site has been redundant since 2010 and, due to its capacity and exceptional connectivity, lends itself ideally to industrial usage. We are looking forward to progressing with our planning application in the forthcoming weeks.”

Residents in the area previously expressed concerns on the effect such a site would have on the infrastructure of the area’s roads.
