Shop keeper slashed in Dewsbury armed robbery

Two men raided Birkdale Newsagents in Mallinson Street at 6.30pm,

The culprits, one holding a knife, shouted at a 33-year-old store attendant for cash.

The male shopkeeper held an arm up to protect himself, when he was slashed, suffering a small wound.

He ducked behind the counter and the offender leaped over and snatched £130 from the till.

The second culprit threw a chocolate bar at the shop worker, hitting him under the eye.

The men fled with the cash, but nothing else was stolen.

Treatment was needed for the shop keeper’s wound at Dewsbury and District Hospital, but he was released.

The knifeman is described as mixed race white and Afro-Caribbean, aged 17-18, slim, about 5ft 7in tall and with dark curly hair. He wore a white hooded top.

The other youth was white, 16 or 17 years old, 5ft 6ins tall with brown hair and wore a black hooded top.

Detective Sergeant Nige Gittens, of Huddersfield CID, said: “Police are appealing for witnesses to this incident and would like to speak to anyone who saw two men either fleeing the shop or behaving suspiciously outside it just prior to this robbery taking place.

“Enquiries are ongoing and anyone who has information is asked to contact Kirklees CID in 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
