So just why is the vicar in a wedding gown?

A vicar will be ‘wearing’ his wife’s wedding dress when he helps celebrate marriage in Spen churches this weekend.

The altar vestment which the Rev Richard Burge wears was actually made from the gown his wife, Heather, wore when the couple were married 17 years ago.

And he will be wearing it this Sunday and next as Hartshead, Hightown, Roberttown and Scholes churches hold special services to celebratemarriage.

“It is not often that a man wears his wife’s wedding dress in public!” said Richard.

“But it is a wonderful reminder of a very special day and of our great partnership of over 17 years.

“Our churches have been part of lots of people’s weddings and will be for another 20 couples this year. Weddings are an important part of the structure in our society and it will be great to celebrate it.

“People who have been married in any of the four churches, or anyone who would like to give thanks for their marriage will be welcome at the services.

“It will be an important service for those whose spouses have died too. Death does not stop us loving someone we have shared so much with. There will be an opportunity to give thanks for happy memories and to bring our sadness to God too. It will be a very special occasion.”

The services are this Sunday in Scholes church at 9.15am and Hightown at 11am and on Sunday February 23 in Roberttown church at 9.15am and Hartshead at 11am.
