The Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) has thrown its hat into the ring for the forthcoming May elections by selecting a candidate for the Batley and Spen constituency.

Dawn Wheelhouse is a school worker in the Dewsbury area who was very involved in the campaign to save Dewsbury and District Hospital services.

She said: “The Con-Dem government has inflicted five years of savage austerity on working class people.

“Unfortunately there is no prospect of this changing beyond the general election, as the leadership of the Labour Party has made it clear that a Labour government would not mean an end to austerity.”

The school worker will face Imtiaz Ameen for the Conservatives, Jo Cox for Labour and Karl Varley for the Patriotic Socialists. Veteran Labour MP Mike Wood is retiring.
