Three Spen teenagers have been chosen to travel 6,000 miles to represent their county in Japan.

John Ellis, from Norristhorpe, along with chums Kieran Byrne and Jack Wilcock, both from Gomersal, have been selected to represent Yorskhire in the 2015 World Scout Jamboree in Japan.

The three, who attend the 7th Spen Valley Scouts in Gomersal, were selected after they had to complete tasks and give a five-minute presentation at the Yorkshire Scouts’ Bradley Woods headquarters.

John’s mum, Claire Ellis, said: “You can image our joy and pride when all three of our lads were selected.

“We believe that this is the first time ever in the UK that three places have ever been appointed to the same Scout troop. John, Jack and Kieran represent Spen Valley, Yorkshire and the UK.”

The trio will travel as part of a 32-member Scout group from the Yorkshire area.

As part of their challenge, each boy has to raise £3,400 through fundraising over the next 18 months. They have already been active in raising the money, doing a bag-pack at Toys R Us in Birstall and a car wash.

Claire added: “We’ve decided to make it a joint effort and collectively work to raise just shy of £11k.

“The boys have so far raised £1,550 overall, so there is £10,400 to go. This will be a great opportunity for all of them.”

The boys have organised a race night on March 1, as well as a family farm festival on June 15, which will include games, tombola and refreshments. Both events will take place at Low Farm, Norristhorpe.

The Scout jamboree will involve Scouts from all over the world, and include a presentation from head Scout Bear Grylls.
