Teams digs for victory!

Volunteers in Hopton and Dewsbury wowed the judges of Yorkshire In Bloom with their commitment, vision and community spirit.

At this year’s awards, Hopton scooped a Silver Gilt Rose Award in the village category.

The judges said: “We were impressed with the enthusiasm and the range of skills and talents the members bring to their village, as well as with their vision. Upper Hopton is a vibrant community and a worthy entry in our competition.”

They praised the bold choice of colour schemes, inspirational residential gardens, a wildflower project and participation by various groups.

Hopton in Bloom volunteer Chris Breare said the team was over the moon.

“It’s been such a difficult season,” she said. “The winter was very cold, spring was warm and summer was very dry so we’ve relied on volunteers watering.

“Everyone in the village made their gardens beautiful for the trail and Kirklees helped by coming to weed the streets for the judging. We’re also supported by people who do little things themselves, not just the regular volunteers.”

The group is already looking at ideas for next year, including working with the cricket club and planting tubs of herbs and vegetables for villagers to pick.

Meanwhile, the judges classed Willerton Close, Dewsbury, as ‘thriving’ in the It’s Your Neighbourhood category.

The judges said: “The commitment of all the community to keep their gardens tidy and well planted was clear to see.

“It was impressive to learn of local residents taking care, with permission, of gardens of empty properties and that new residents are keen to support this community entry.”
