Two men, Joe Wallis and Matthew Willis, 28, who were also in the Seat Ibiza, escaped with minor injuries after the car hit a wall and a parked Ford Ka at the junction with Peter Hill at about 7.50pm before flipping onto its roof.

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance helicopter was called and landed on fields behind Commonside.

Four ambulances, two fire engines and police vehicles rushed to the scene.

Neighbours described hearing loud banging and scraping sounds and seeing smoke fill the road.

They said people rushed out to the car to try and help the injured.

Luke Holmes, of Peter Hill, said he ran over and tried to comfort the injured.

He said: “It is all a blur – it happened so fast. “It sounded like a trailer full of metal had gone over. It’s nothing I want to see again.”

The Ford Ka owner, Michael Eady, of Commonside, said he heard a bang and looked out to see his crumpled car.

Fire service watch commander John Jackson said: “The car was upside down and had shunted the stationary vehicle around 20m or 30m forward.”

Any witnesses to the incident, or anyone who saw the Seat Ibiza immediately before the crash, are asked to contact police on 101.
