Testing for HIV being offered

The Brunswick Centre and Lifeline Kirklees will provide an opportunity for people to take a test at a close and convenient place as well as provide them with the information and resources they need to protect themselves.

This has been organised as part of National HIV Testing Week, which begins on Saturday in the run up to World Aids Day on December1.

CounViv Kendrick, cabinet member with responsibility for public health, said: “There are around 350 people in Kirklees accessing HIV treatment with around 17 new cases each year.

“People who are living with undiagnosed HIV are much more likely to suffer ill-health. If HIV is not diagnosed and treated it can be fatal. With early treatment, those living with HIV can remain fit and well and have a normal life expectancy.”

During the week of awareness, organisations will team up to encourage testing on those who are part of higher-risk communities, including men who have male sexual partners and African people.

The test involves a simple and painless finger prick and can provide results in 20 minutes.
