Two young business owners have praised Kirklees Council for its invaluable help in setting up their hair salon.

Andy Merriman, 26, and Luke Pepper, 21, opened LP Hair in Bath Court Enterprise Centre, Heckmondwike, which is run by Kirklees Council.

Their business has been so successful that they have opened a beauty room – and said they couldn’t have done it without Kirklees’s help.

Andy said: “The council gets a lot of bad press but it has really helped us out. Without them this shop wouldn’t have happened.

“They provided premises but we were struggling with the deposit so they lowered it.

“At first they gave us a lot of free rent and waived charges.to build up the business, such as the charge for planning permission to change it from office to retail and they waived the charge.

“We want people to be aware of young enterprise centres and what they do.

“I don’t think people know there are opportunities for young people to get into business.

“We got the keys in August and it took about eight weeks to turn it into a hairdresser’s. We opened on October 4.”

Andy said the business had been so successful, they had opened a beauty salon there too, run by customer Lauren Townsend.

He added: “We wouldn’t have been able to do it without the help and guidance we’ve had from the council.”
