Kirklees Council has announced it will close Whitcliffe Mount Sports Centre within three years.

The decision comes after a council Cabinet meeting this week where councillors decided it would close by late 2016, as part of the contract to rebuild neighbouring Whitcliffe Mount School.

The school has plans to rebuild on an adjacent site, which threw the future of the sports centre into doubt, as it shares an electricity and gas supply with the school.

Deputy leader of Kirklees Council David Sheard said: “We are supporting the new school build – and if we can get some capital behind us to replace the site, we will do. We want a replacement by 2016.

“We have a report coming to council in the next few weeks on what is sustainable for the future of the sports centre.”

Cleckheaton councillor Kath Pinnock said: “I am determined to get this replaced – Spen needs a sports centre.

“We have to get moving quickly – the only challenge we face is getting the money, and if the council can spend millions on refurbishing Dewsbury Town Hall, there is still obviously money available.

“But we can’t have 50,000 people in Spen go without a sports centre.”

Coun Sheard believes the council should consider merging the sports centre with Spenborough Pool complex in Littletown.

He added: “I think we should look at the possibility of adding facilities to the site at Spen pool, as it is a site that is in the centre of the Spen Valley, on a main road and can be easily accessed by everybody.”
