Top award for youth group Kumon Y’all

A YOUTH group has beaten competition from throughout West Yorkshire to win a police prize.

Volunteers at Kumon Y’all beat 60 entrants to scoop the i12 award.

The annual project was set up to encourage young people to work together on a problem affecting their community. Kumon Y’all identified burglary as an issue that needed to be tackled in Savile Town and Thornhill Lees.

Farook Yunus, who runs the group, said: “Burglary has gone up quite a bit in this area, so we thought ‘let’s start working on this’.”

Volunteers designed and delivered a leaflet highlighting the problem of weak ‘euro-profile’ locks to more than 2300 homes in Thornhill Lees and made a youtube video showing people how to replace them. Officers from West Yorkshire Police presented volunteers with their award. “It’s motivated them to do even more work,” added Mr Yunus.
