Traffic busting M62 works now complete

Highways England (formerly the Highways Agency) started work on the project between junction 30 at Rothwell and junction 32 at Glass Houghton in January 2014.

The scheme - part of the government’s £317m national pinch point’ programme includes new CCTV cameras and automatic traffic monitoring between junction 30 and junction 32.

Data is then be sent to the Highways Agency’s regional control centre in Wakefield which is able to apply temporary speed limits on new electronic signs.

Other works carried out as part of the project include the widening of slip roads of junction 31 at Whitwood and 32 at Glasshoughton to increase capacity at the junctions.

Highways bosses hope the works will ease congestion during peak hours.

Works are still continuing to install a new ‘managed motorway’ on the M1.

The £120m scheme will see the hard shoulder become permanent lanes during peak times between junction 39 at Durkar and junction 42 at Lofthouse.

Highways England expect the scheme to be complete by September.

As part of the works, the northbound carriageway will be closed overnight on Thursday, May 7 between junction 40 at Ossett and junction 41 at Carr Gate.

The southbound carriageway will also be closed between junction 41 and junction 40 on Friday, May 8.

Closures will be in place from 8pm until 6am.
