Tributes to popular and loyal cricketer

Tributes have been paid to a popular and loyal sportsman who was well-known in cricket circles across North Kirklees.

Popular Mirfield cricketer Andy Bolt has died.

Andy Bolt, who spent 30 years with Mirfield Cricket Club, died aged 56 after suffering from Parkinson’s disease.

Mr Bolt’s wife Janet said: “Andy never really considered leaving Mirfield. He had grown up there and had a lot of happy times there.”

Mirfield Cricket Club president Eric Bell said: “Andy enjoyed success with Mirfield in the 80s and 90s with a League and Heavy Woollen Cup double, making a man of the match performance in the victory over Shepley. He also captained the side to Jack Hampshire Cup triumph in 1994.

“His loyalty – a rare quality these days – to his cricket club was legendary, and his support both home and away for his beloved football club, Huddersfield Town, was unwavering.

“We shall miss Bolty, he was a legend at Mirfield Cricket Club and throughout the Central Yorkshire Cricket League.”

He leaves a wife Janet, 52, son David, 23, and a daughter Emma, 20.

Mr Bolt was born in Mirfield and attended Knowl Primary School followed by Heckmondwike Grammar School.

He died Sunday November 8 at Dewsbury and District Hospital and his funeral will be held at Dewsbury Moor Crematorium on Monday November 23 at 10.30am. It will be followed by a gathering at Canalside in Huddersfield.
