Troubled school’s plan is ‘not fit for purpose’

Chickenley Community, Infant and Nursery School was placed in special measures after inspectors highlighted “weaknesses in the quality of teaching” and pupil underachievement in November last year.

Now a follow-up inspection has found that the school’s plan for turning things around is “not fit for purpose”.

In a letter to the school, Inspector Jonathan Brown said leaders had not taken effective action to improve on weak areas.

But he did say that Kirklees Council’s action plan was fit for purpose.

A Kirklees spokesman said: “[Executive head] Richard Lee is very experienced and will have a particular focus on ensuring that there is a positive work ethos which supports children’s learning.

“We are also ensuring that the school is governed with rigour and with a clear focus on the expertise needed to raise standards as quickly as possible.”

Headteacher Bronagh King said: “Everyone at the school is continuing to work very hard on raising standards as quickly as possible.”
