Two refugee families land in Kirklees

As part of the government’s plan to resettle up to 20,000 people who have fled the war-ravaged region, around 130 people will be re-homed in this district.

Coun Graham Turner, Cabinet member for resources and community safety, said: “The council are committed to ensuring that these families are provided with the support they need to allow them to start a safe, new life in Kirklees.

“We have received funding from the government to help the families to get settled in as quickly as possible. However, these families have been through experiences that many of us simply couldn’t imagine, and I know many local people are eager to show them support and help them feel at home.”

He said that Kirklees foundation One Community has set up a system for people and businesses to make cash donations.

“The cash will be passed through to voluntary groups working directly with vulnerable migrants from around the world who are living in Kirklees,” he said.

The two families were re-located as part of the vulnerable persons relocation scheme, which grants at least five years’ humanitarian protection. It also allows them the right to work, eligibility for benefits, access to health and education and the right to apply for family reunification.

A Kirklees Council spokeswoman said the families were identified as being some of those most in need of support.

Upto 550 refugees are expected in West Yorkshires as part of the resettlement programme.
