UB40 heading to Millennium Square in Leeds

Legendary reggae combo UB40 will perform a special one-off gig on Millennium Square next summer.

Leeds City Council and music promoter Live Promotions Events Ltd and have teamed up to bring the chart-topping group, led by original front man Ali Campbell, to Leeds on Saturday July 18 2015.

Famed for iconic hits including Red Red Wine and Can’t Help Falling in Love, the group will perform in a specially-created outdoor arena on the square complete with licensed bars and concessions.

Speaking on Millennium Square where he was announcing the concert today, Ali said:“We’re really looking forward to it. We’ve played Leeds a few times, but never in the city centre, outdoors so I think it’ll be brilliant.

“It’s going to be 100 per cent reggae- we’re coming to party, and I hope Leeds will come along and party with us.”

Formed in 1978 in Birmingham, UB40 have had more than 50 singles in the UK Singles Chart and have sold more than 70 million records worldwide.

They have also been nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album four times, and in 1984 were nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Group.

Coun Katherine Mitchell, Leeds City Council’s lead member for digital and creative technologies, culture and skills, said: “It’s really exciting to welcome such an iconic act to Leeds and this will be the perfect way to get the summer in full swing.

“The thought of Millennium Square packed with people all enjoying some great music in the sunshine is something we can all look forward to and I’m sure the event will be a big success.”

Gates for the event will be open from 6pm with the main performances including support (to be announced) starting at 7.30pm.
