UPDATED: Town hall flags will be lowered for Thatcher funeral

Flags at town halls across Kirklees will be lowered in line with government guidelines for Margaret Thatcher’s funeral on Wednesday.

A spokesman for Kirklees Council announced today (Monday), that flags at Dewsbury, Cleckheaton, Batley and Huddersfield town halls will be lowered to half mast in line with protocol for the funerals of former UK prime ministers.

Strength of feeling in some areas, including nearby Wakefield, has led local authorities to bow to public pressure and not lower their union flags.

Coun David Pinder, mayor of Mirfield, said town councillors had voted in favour of lowering its union flag at half mast.

He said: “To date I have heard of no objection and frankly am unconcerned whether anyone objects or not.

“The calibre of people making fuss about Baroness Thatcher only reinforces for me that she must have been right most of the time if they object.”

Do you think the flags should be lowered to half mast as a mark of respect for Margaret Thatcher?
