Visitors admired decorated barges competing for the title of best dressed boat, took a spin on fairground rides and listened to live music on Saturday’s opening day.

The festivities continued on Sunday when families took to the waterways.

Mirfield-based charity Safe Anchor Trust offered free trips along the Calder and Hebble Navigation, while more adventurous visitors took up the chance to try paddling on the canal in a coracle.

Other attractions included circus skills training, rock climbing and a boat pull competition.

The weekend of free activities was part of Outdoor Dewsbury Festival, a Dewsbury Regeneration Board initiative to promote the town’s green spaces and encourage people to get active.
