Warning to residents after bogus caller demanded money from pensioner

At around 11am on Friday November 13, a man has attended at the 89-year-old victim’s address claiming that the drains of his property have overflowed and requesting money to carry out the repairs.

The male householder became suspicious and said he was going to phone the police. The man then left in an unknown direction.

The man is described as white, aged in his 30s, approximately 5ft 10ins tall, of slim build. He spoke with a local accent and was wearing a blue boiler suit with some sort of insignia or writing on the left breast.

Detective Constable Jim Calpin, of Kirklees District CID, said: “The victim did the right thing in this situation by advising that he was going to phone the police. A legitimate caller would not leave at the threat of police attendance and would be happy to wait and verify their identity.

“As part of our enquiries in to this incident we are keen to hear from anyone else who has received a similar caller at their door or anyone who believes they have seen the man described in the Dewsbury Moor area around the time of this offence.

“Anyone with information or with concerns about a caller at their address should call 101. In the case of an emergency always call 999.”
