‘WELCOME to the Carlton estate’ – a message 43 years in the making.
Residents of the Cleckheaton estate have campaigned through its Tenants and Residents’ Association for improvements for several years.
Their hard work has finally paid off, as a new sign was unveiled to put their estate firmly on the map.
It has been known locally, if not officially, as the Carlton Estate due to the former Carlton House building occupying the land before the houses were built.
However, residents are pleased that the name will forever be associated with the estate.
TRA chairman Terry Windle said: “No-one ever bothered to give the estate a name, so we decided to try and do something about it.
“After travelling around meeting other TRA groups, I got the idea that we should have a proper name too. I canvassed all 137 houses on the estate and everyone seemed to agree.
“It’s a lovely little estate and a great community.”
Terry, along with TRA secretary and treasurer Ken Womersley, Coun Kath Pinnock and estate manager Jim Todd were on hand for the unveiling.
