Woman whose life was saved by a double lung transplant to run 10k

Just over four years ago, Philippa Carter was facing death after the disease caused her health to rapidly decline.

She has spoken of the trauma she faced of “coughing up her guts” while struggling to walk up and down the stairs.

But after five months on the transplant waiting list and four false calls, the former Castle Hill pupil eventually gained a double lung transplant at Freeman Hospital in Newcastle in 2010.

Mrs Carter, 24, who used to live in Chapel Street, Mirfield, is now taking on a fundraising feat to help fight the disease.

“All through my childhood I struggled to breathe,” she said.

“I was on oxygen all of the time and needed to use a ventilator over night. Everything became a struggle.

“I was 20-years-old and I had not even lived yet. The surgery saved my life.”

Mrs Carter, who now lives in Commonside, Batley, said getting fit was her motivation for signing up for the race.

“I had to give up doing a lot of things at school like playing netball but I have got second chance at life and do not want to waste it,” she said.
