WWI centenary: Facelift for John’s window
The colourful feature honours the sacrifice of old boy John Hanstock, who died from wounds in France in 1918, just shortly after leaving the school.
The window was put up in the old library during the 1930s. But since 2000, the feature – as well as another window positioned next to it – have been obscured by a classroom at the junior school part of the site.

The Batelians Committee, who help to fund school heritage projects, have overseen the renovation.
President Jonathan Storey, 33, of Bracken Close, Mirfield, said: “It’s a fitting and poignant memorial for him and the school as well.
“For all the old boys, when we have reunions, it’s something that’s a focal point in the school – and when they get it back up it will be even more of a focal point.”

Last year’s WWI centenary anniversary was a motivation in getting the memorial window seen to.
“I think it’s ideal,” said Mr Storey. “It was discussed a couple of years ago. Members of the committee are happy with it and think it’s perfect timing.
“The guy who came to take the windows said that within 12 months they might have fallen out!”
The Batelians Committee funded this work through subscriptions and fundraising events.
