The singer performed three tracks for a private audience of the winner of Asda’s national Mother’s Day competition, Laura Newsome from Batley and her mum Angela, on Monday in the Morley store.

Angela did not believe her daughter when she told her they were going to be serenaded by one of the biggest selling female vocalists of last year.

Laura, who is studying nursing at Manchester University, said: “It took four days to get her to believe that I won. We honestly thought we were going in a minibus so we were shocked when a limo arrived outside the house to take us there, it really was VIP treatment.

“My mum was over the moon with it and Sam was absolutely lovely, she told me that it was really nice to read my entry.”

Asda asked customers to write in with the reasons why their mum should be serenaded by the pop star at their local supermarket. The prize also included a signed copy of Sam’s e debut album, The Power of Love, and VIP treatment on the day of the show.
