Xclusiv’s renaissance continues

Batley’s legendary goth haven Xclusiv is back after a bar owner decided to start weekly club nights aimed at its original 1980s clientele.

Landlord Chris Ingram was inspired by a recent revival of interest in the night after the Squash Club in Dewsbury started events under the name.

Chris, who was a DJ at the club in its heyday, said: “I’m 59 and my kind of age group only see each other at parties because there’s nowhere to go.

“I’m trying to get people who used to go to Xclusiv to come down.”

In its 1980s prime, the post-punk throb of bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees, Sisters of Mercy, Killing Joke, The Cult and The Cramps boomed from the Station Road club.

But as well as focusing on Xclusiv’s trademark sound, Chris’ night will also incorporate the delights of soul and Motown to reflect his age group’s tastes. The re-vamped night will take place in Bank Bar in Hick Lane from this Saturday. Entrance is £2 and lasts from midnight until 2am.
