A CANOEIST paddled through Dewsbury into Mirfield during a 700-mile trip to raise money for Help For Heroes.

David Penk is canoeing around England. He has already raised £3,000 and arrived in Mirfield on Friday.

Before setting off from Guildford four weeks ago, Mr Penk contacted the Pennine Canoe Club in Mirfield.

Club members picked him up from Horbury Bridge and took him to a campsite in Meltham on Friday night.

They dropped him back off in Horbury Bridge the next morning. From there, he paddled through Dewsbury to Mirfield.

On Friday afternoon, he paddled to Huddersfield to meet the Mayor of Kirklees, Coun Eric Firth.

On Sunday, the Canoe Club helped Mr Penk through the Pennines by opening the many locks on the canal to Manchester. The club also used its van to take Mr Penk and his canoe over Standedge Tunnel in Huddersfield, as it would not have been safe for him to paddle through.
