Yorkshire Thoroughbred Car Club gearing up for a return visit to Dewsbury

Crow Nest Park was the setting for a show featuring more than 100 cars of various models and makes.

And the club’s first visit to the park proved so successful that it is hoped they will return next May Day.

Barry Simkin, a member of the Friends of Crow Nest Park and the car club, said: “They used to have the meet at the White Rose but last year they withdrew their permission. They were so busy that they couldn’t give the space.

“I suggested we talk to the Friends to see if it would work. They were very much in favour and quite rightly so because it turned out to be a very good event in spite of the weather. Everybody said how different it was with it being a mix of makes and how interesting it was to get to speak to different people.

“The club has asked if they can hold it in the park again next year.”

Judges awarded prizes in several classes and prizes were presented by the Mayor of Kirklees, Coun Eric Firth.

The coveted award for car of the show went to Mervyn Hoyle, of Harrogate, who displayed his 1933 Austin Seven. Mr Hoyle has raised more than £1m for Marie Curie Cancer Care by taking his car all over the country.

Mr Simkin added: “Mervyn has a very big heart. He’s got more than one vehicle but it doesn’t matter what he comes in, it’s always superbly turned out.”
