Former MP’s praise for diamond couple

I WAS very pleased to read your report of the diamond wedding celebration of Donald and Joan Chesterman (Spenborough Guardian December 17).

I first met Joan and Donald soon after I joined the Labour Party more than 50 years ago and had the privilege to work with Donald when we were both members of the former Spenborough Council and also when he was my election agent for Brighouse and Spenborough at the 1979 general election.

Donald has a long and distinguished record of pubic service in the Spen Valley and has always been well liked and respected for his caring and gentle manner, both quiet spoken and solid as a rock

Joan has been a remarkable worker for the Labour Party and the local community, an excellent organiser, and an outstanding cook who always insisted that political campaigners should be kept well fed.

Donald and Joan Chesterman have together been a key force in the Spen Valley and the Labour Party for so many years, long distance runners in serving the community, always loyal and to be relied on through thick and thin, and the very best of stalwarts.
