Is time up for historic fountain clock?

Over the years the fountain clock in Heckmondwike market place must have cost the old Heckmondwike UDC and Kirklees MDC many thousands of pounds.

It has been repaired countless times, but each time after a few months, the clock always breaks down again.

I suggested a while ago the clock should be replaced with a fountain (as it originally was) to mark the diamond jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen.

This idea got no response from either our councillors or the town’s Chamber of Trade or anyone else. Perhaps in the present climate, when the

council is being forced to make unpopular spending cuts by this disasterous Tory-led government, the clock should be dismantled and sold for scrap.

It would give the council a few bob to spend in Huddersfield or Dewsbury, and also provide two or three extra parking spaces in what must be the best car park surface anywhere.
