Overwhelming support from Spen for poppy appeal

On behalf of the Spenborough branch of the Royal British Legion we would like to thank the residents of Spen Valley for their support of the poppy appeal.

The amount collected this year was £22,353; this figure includes donations received for wreaths supplied for Remembrance Sunday. The money raised is needed as much today as it ever was in the past.

Special mention must be made of the district organisers who distribute poppies throughout the districts, Mrs Haley and Mr Bailey, Oakenshaw; Mr and Mrs Mills, Gomersal; Mrs Haigh, Liversedge; Mrs Stone, Hartshead; Mr Wilkinson for Moorend and Hunsworth, Mr Yates and Mr Spencer for East Bierley and Mr Harrison, Birkenshaw, and to all the shops and outlets who let us place collecting boxes in their premises.

Thanks also go to Mrs Marriott who organises the street collections in Cleckheaton, and her dedicated team; Members of the 9th Spen Valley Scouts and associated leaders for the collecting in Cleckheaton; Allan Serjeant, who organises the collection team in Tesco, and David Walker who organises the teams that collect at Hartshead Moor Services.

I cannot mention all the volunteers who form the above teams but they know who they are and the Legion Committee is eternally grateful for your commitment to the appeal.

But the biggest thank you goes to the public of the Spenborough area who have been more than generous in what are austere times.

Once again to everyone who supported the appeal, in whatever form, many thanks.

Chairman, Spenborough Branch Royal British Legion
