Solving the travellers’ dilemma

HAVING read in the Spenborough Guardian recently of travellers setting up camp on Dale Lane, Curwen Crescent, Millbridge Park and Dewsbury and District Hospital’s car park, isn’t it time that Kirklees Council looked at providing a solution for this problem rather than spending public money on county court bailiffs to evict them?

Some local authorities provide official sites and employ gypsy liaison officers – thus strengthening the relationship between travellers, the police and the council. Kirklees appears to do none of this.

There are around 320 council-run gypsy and travellers’ sites in England and Wales, a few of them work alongside the local tenants and residents’ associations.

The families are registered with GPs and dentists, children attend the local school and crime has been reduced.

Surely Kirklees could develop a policy along these lines and pave the way towards strengthening community relations.
