The FA Cup Final on May 11 between Wigan and Manchester City will be the 60th anniversary of what became known as the ‘Stanley Matthews Final’ – one of the finest footballers tat this country produced.
In its heydey Heckmondwike footwear company Goliath – also known as the Co-op Boot Company – made football boots for the ‘Wizard of Dribble’.
He had an illustrious footballing career with Blackpool, Stoke City and England. Every year he went through several pairs of the special light boots which made him quick on his feet.
He visited the factory to see how they were made and to meet the workers.
It is rumoured that he was paid 2d each time he wore them for a match – which is regarded as the beginning of football sponsorship,
