Dewsbury-based project Kumon Y’all received a Crimebeat Award from the High Sherriffs Association of England and Wales for a charity football tournament held last year.

Project leader Farook Yunus said: “It means a lot because it encourages youngsters to do even more in the community. It is a really nice way of getting them excited to do more.

“As well as being a football tournament, the aim was to bring people together as there is a lot of misunderstanding in Dewsbury.

“We are hoping to build on this.”

Farook said there was ongoing debate as to where the £1,000 prize money given to the group should be spent.

He said: “Some of them want to go to Europe, some of them want to buy a Playstation. Maybe we’ll go to Europe but, whatever the case, it will be spent on the kids.”
