Batley Boys bow out of Pennine Cup

Championship high-fliers Chequerfield edged a tight game 24-16 to reach the second round and Batley.

Batley knew they faced a physical challenge, but were ready to stand up and be counted and there was solid defence from Malcolm Kellett, Gav Davis and Aaron James.

Chequerfield were restricted to just one first half try to lead 6-0 but the home side scored two early second half tries to lead 18-0 after 45 minutes.

Batley began to break the opposition’s line and were finally rewarded with a try from Rob Bingham.

Frustrated Chequerfield began to give away penalties, while Batley kept their cool and after Josh Whitehead crossed, the Boys added a third try to make it 18-16.

With five minutes remaining, Batley were awarded another penalty but Bingham’s effort at goal, which would have levelled matters, fell just short.

Chequerfield regained possession and scored in the final minute to seal victory.

It was a great performance from Batley against a strong team who are flying high in the Pennine Championship.

Batley’s MoM was Malcolm Kellett, closely followed by Aaron James and Gav Davis and they will aim to bounce back on Saturday when they host Brighouse in Championship One.
