The Bradford College Boxing Academy pair travelled to the Echo Arena in Liverpool and came within a whisker of claiming national titles.

Lightweight (60kg) O’Regan boxed well in last Friday’s quarter-final and gained a unanimous points decision over Yousif Saeed.

Number three seed O’Regan went on to defeat awkward southpaw fighter Jack Brooker in the semi-finals, booking a place in Sunday’s final against Great Britain boxer and number one seed Calum French.

O’Regan again caught the eye, earning praise from several Great Britain squad coaches in attendance and many in the arena thought the Heckmondwike man had done enough to win but it was French, who was awarded the contest on a split decision.

Flyweight Khan, who is also a student at Bradford College, and boxes out of the KBW Gym in Dewsbury progressed to Sunday’s final with unanimous victories over Ryan Briscoe in the quarter-finals and Great Britain boxer Niall Farrell in the semis.

Khan went on to meet Oldham’s unseeded boxer William Cawley in the 52kg final when he was edged out.

O’Regan and Khan are both protégés of former Dewsbury professional Mally McIver, who heads up the elite boxing programme at Bradford College.

The three-day championships, which took place at the Echo Arena, are the culmination of the domestic calendar for amateur boxing clubs in England.

n KBW boxer Subhaan Mohammed won a gold medal at the Three National Championships in Wales.

Subhaan, pictured below, became English junior champion in the 52kg category before going on to represent his country last week.

Subhaan overcame Casey Johnson points, having forced an eight-count in the second round of their bout.
