Three new champions crowned at Cleckheaton Boxing Club

Cleckheaton Boxing Club has added three new champions to their honour roll in the last month.

The club, on Bradford Road, Cleckheaton has crowned two Yorkshire Schoolboy champions and a University champion, they have also had two Yorkshire finalists as well as recording a string of successes at boxing shows around the country.

In the Yorkshire Schoolboy Championships at Ryhill and Havercroft, near Wakefield, Ismail Khan won the title for Class Three at the 40kg weight division.

Kabeer Khan, no relation to Ismail, was crowned Class One winner for the 44kg weight division. Both boys will now compete in the National Schoolboy Championship quarter-finals held in Liverpool in March.

Jordan Schofield battled his way to the Yorkshire Novice Finals in the Under-20 bout category. However, he was injured prior to the final and had to withdraw from the competition, which is a huge shame as he was hoping to build on his record of five wins out of five this season.

Ben Hargreaves of Shaw Cross lost in the Yorkshire Novice final for boxers with fewer than 10 bouts.

Leeds University student Ashley Vanzie, who trains at Cleckheaton, under head coach Keith Tate, won the senior light heavyweight title at the University Championships held in Doncaster.

Vanzie, the brother of Bobby Vanzie, who won a Lonsdale belt outright as a lightweight in 2001, is expected to take part in the ABA Championships later in the season.

In other competitions Cleckheaton’s 20-strong team of boxers has been very successful recording 23 wins with 13 losses since the season began in October.

Sean Bube has been one of the outstanding performers this season with an impressive record of five wins in as many bouts.

There is a chance to see many of the promising young boxers who are training at the Cleckheaton club at their next dinner show which is to be held at the Cedar Court Hotel, Bradford on Wednesday March 28.
