Cards a plenty as Trojans lose

THORNHILL Trojans produced a battling display in an entertaining Pennine League Premier Division encounter.

The main talking point was the five cards shown by the referee — four yellow and a red.

There was an inspirational display from Thornhill man-of-the-match Jake Wilson, although he was first to be sent to the sin-bin for dissent.

Hunslet made the extra man count when scrum-half Luke O’Malley crossed for an unconverted try but Thornhill hit back when Andrew Bates kicked to the corner and winger Ryan Fenton dived over to level the scores.

Mason Bailey, returning from Yorkshire duty, raced through and beat the full-back to score between the posts. Bates converted.

Early in the second half Alwyn Whittaker scored and Old Boys hooker Andy Hullock then dummied over from acting half-back and O’Malley converted.

Thornhill’s task became even harder when James Folan was sent off for a stiff arm tackle and O’Malley slotted over a drop goal.

Thornhill refused to buckle and Bates sent Joss Ratcliffe over for a try which Bates goaled, while Hunslet’s Craig Boot was sin-binned for disputing the score.

Thornhill’s optimism was short lived as Keiran Murphy cut through to score a great solo try which O’Malley converted.

Tempers boiled over following this try and Old Boys’ Melvyn Brown was sin-binned for violent conduct.

Hullock shrugged off a tackle to score the match clinching try before Bates was also sent to the sin-bin for dissent.

Thornhill entertain Queensbury in the Premier Division on Saturday (kick off 2pm).

DEWSBURY Moor produced a committed display but it wasn’t enough to halt Pennine Premier high-fliers Slaithwaite.

Moor handed a debut to 17-year-old Connor Squires at full-back but he was unable to prevent Slaithwaite scoring unconverted tries through former Batley player Ben Feehan and winger Marlon Billy.

Ex-Swinton Lions man Billy added his second try to make it 12-0 before Moor hooker Peter Robinson sent AJ Bordman over for a try which captain Andy Robinson converted.

Billy completed his hat-trick and Sam Ansell added the goal but Moor hit back when Bordman scooted through and sent home man-of-the-match Peter Robinson over. Andy Robinson’s goal saw Moor pull back to 18-12.

However, former Oldham player Ritchie Hawkyard sent Answell over for a try which the full-back converted to seal Slaithwaite’s win.

Moor make the short trip to Drighlington this Saturday (ko 2pm).

WYKE got their Pennine League Division Two campaign back on track, producing their best rugby of the season to seal victory at Underbank.

Wyke’s first try came after 20 minutes when Ian Watkinson broke and fed Ashley Hutchinson to race over.

It remained 4-0 at half-time but Wyke extended their lead when Dean Smith latched on to a kick to cross and Michael Wormald converted.

Underbank pulled a converted try back but with fog threatening to see the game abandoned, veteran Craig Hillam scored the decisive try and Wormald converted.

Wyke have a tasty Bradford Cup clash at home to Birkenshaw this Saturday (2pm).
