Cleckheaton will remain focussed on achieving their first points in National League Three North when they travel to Lymm tomorrow (ko 3pm).

Cleckheaton produced some enterprising rugby before slipping to a third straight defeat last week, going down 41-12 at home to Sheffield Tigers.

Cleckheaton had the better of the early stages but Sheffield showed their strike force when winger Jamie Broadley broke from his own 22 and outpaced the defence to cross between the posts.

Mark Ireland converted and added a penalty before Nick Pearson broke from the back of a scrum to score and put the Tigers 15-0-0 ahead.

Cleckheaton started the second period brightly with Tom Austin working hard and Richard Piper proving a handful for the defence.

Sheffield survived a spell of pressure and from a relieving penalty and resulting line-out, the Tigers scored the best try of the game.

From halfway, the ball was moved through several pairs of hands before flanker Lee Monks scored in the corner.

Cleckheaton gave themselves hope when Jack Bickerdike sent winger Sam Walker, powering over in the corner.

Ed Simmons scattered the defence to score a converted try at the other end before Bickerdike scooted over for Cleck. Mike Piper converted.

Hopes of a bonus point were ended as the Tigers scored two converted tries in the last 10 minutes to give the final scoreline a flattering look.

Tomorrow’s trip to Lymm offers Cleckheaton a good chance to pick up points as the Cheshire outfit have lost two of their opening three games.

The team will dash back to Moorend after tomorrow’s game to watch the England v Wales World Cup match (ko 8pm) on a big screen in the clubhouse, when members and non members are also welcome to attend.
