Cleckheaton ease to Priestley Cup victory

Last season’s beaten finalists dismissed Division Two side Gomersal for 127, despite the efforts of Adam Greenwood (34) and captain Graham Hilton (30).

Leg spinner Tanzeel Altaf claimed 5-31 to put Cleckheaton on course for victory before in-form opener Tim Jackson continued his fine start to the season by making an unbeaten 62.

Captain John Wood (32no) and former Gomersal player Andy Gorrod (31) helped ease Cleckheaton into the second round second round.

They were joined in Wednesday’s draw by Woodlands, who defeated Scholes by eight wickets on Sunday.

Scholes may have won all three games in Division Two but have found the going much tougher against top flight opposition in the two cup competitions.

Scholes were bowled out for 89 as Pieter Swanepoel claimed 4-17 following the early successes of Elliot Richardson (3-27).

Woodlands lost opener Duncan Snell without a run on the board, before Sam Frankland (55) and Scott Richardson (31no) took charge.

They added 88 for the second wicket before Frankland departed with two needed to win. He struck three sixes and six fours.

East Bierley bowed out as they slipped to a 75-run defeat against New Farnley.

Nick Johnson (34) and Andrew Hodd (31) helped Farnley post 172-9, with Awais Ejaz claiming 4-61, while Bierley were all out for 97 in reply.

Spen Victoria also fell at the first hurdle, slipping to a nine-wicket defeat against fellow second division side Keighley.

Captain Richard Wear claimed 6-29 as Spen were dismissed for 84 and he followed up with 42 not out as he and Jack Beetham (43no) sealed victory.

The one bright spot for Spen was Danny Simpson’s unbeaten 31.

Ian Philliskirk produced an impressive all-round performance to guide Hanging Heaton to a six-wicket win over Baildon.

Philliskirk guided Baildon to the Bradford League Division One title in 2009 but plotted their cup downfall.

Philliskirk took 6-37 as Baildon were dismissed for 195, with overseas player Waqas Maqsood making 90.

Philliskirk hit 87, including four sixes and 10 fours, while support from Nick Connolly (42) and Gary Fellows (34) saw Heaton through.
