Clemence clocks new world record at Forge

A huge field of swimmers from across the country took part in the three-day competition and Clemence was one of the East Leeds club swimmers who enjoyed great success.

Clubmate Chris Knee had a championships to remember as he broke two world records, as well as a British record, on his way to a personal haul of two golds, a silver and two bronze medals.

Knee claimed his first gold in the men’s 120+ years 4x50m freestyle relay, teaming-up with Clemence and Joshua Spencer and Alistair Crawford to finish six seconds ahead of their rivals and claim a world record with a time of 1:32.39.

Wakefield swimmer James Warren was in the East Leeds B team that claimed bronze in the same race, stopping the clock in a time of 1:39.24.

Knee and Warren then helped clock a world’s best 3:29.94 to win gold in the 100+ years 4x100m freestyle relay, with teammates Crawford and Richard Jagger.

Stanley’s Bill Moore, 78, who was recently voted the UK’s most active person over the age of 65 in a national competition sponsored by Ateronon, maintained his terrific record in masters competitions with two golds in the 1,500m freestyle and 200m breaststroke and silver medals in the 50m and 100m breaststrokes and the 800m freestyle.

Knee said: “It feels brilliant to get a world record. To do it as a [relay] team, I think is even better than an individual for me. We [East Leeds] are an up and coming club and our membership is growing, which is giving us a really strong squad of swimmers across all strokes and distances.”
