Cory powers to semi-final

BIRSTALL’S Yorkshire boxing champion Cory O’Regan has reached the semi-finals of the National ABA Championships after a tough contest in the 56kg quarter-final at Great Barr, Birmingham last Sunday.

O’Regan, from the Cleckheaton Boxing Academy, beat Liam Shiels of the Nechells Club in Birmingham on points over three rounds.

O’Regan had a standing count in the third round which made his opponent think he had won. However, much to the delight of head coach Keith Tate it was the Cleckheaton boxer who had his arm raised by the referee as he won the contest 54-52.

O’Regan had proved too strong in the previous rounds and on the computer scoring system, which records punches landed, he won the first round 4-3. The second round was 7-7 and after a talking to from his corner O’Regan took the third round, despite the standing count.

O’Regan will appear in the National semi-finals which are at Ryhill and Havercroft on May 7 and 8.
