Mary Wood Memorial hosts increase league lead

On a day when most other games in the league were abandoned, Crossbank played a 30-overs-a-side game and having been asked to bat first, Jack Spencer (60) and James Lord (46) impressed to help them post 146.

Jimmy Abbott then produced a spell of fast and accurate bowling to finish with figures of 6-20 as Horbury Bridge were bowled out for 54 in 18 overs, just before heavy rain returned.

Crossbank also staged the Mary Wood Memorial Sixes Competition on Bank Holiday Monday.

Heckmondwike & Carlinghow defended their title after beating a Central Yorkshire League representative side, Mel Wood’s Heroes in a nailbiting final.

The sides tied on 54 but Heckmondwike & Carlinghow regained the trophy after losing fewer wickets.

Heckmondwike and Carlinghow overcame CYL side Scholes, Upper Hopton and Crossbank on their way to the final following some impressive batting from J Hudston.

The competition was another fitting tribute to the late Mayoress and tea lady at Crossbank CC Mary Wood.

n Mirfield Cricket Club will be celebrating its Diamond Jubilee Year by holding a day of events this Sunday (September). At 9.30am there will be a Dads v Lads match, 12.30pm a bowl out at a wicket takes place for all ages and at 2pm The President’s XI (consisting of past MCC players) take on the Captain’s XI (consisting of the current players).

There will be bar facilities, barbecue and other refreshments available during the day and everyone is welcome.
