CLECKHEATON RU have all eyes on Tuesday’s eagerly anticpiated Yorkshire Cup quarter-final after tomorrow’s scheduled North East One game at Team Northumbria was postponed at late notice, writes Trevor Watson.
The Moorenders had selected their squad to travel north only to be informed that Team Northumbria were unable to raise a side and the match had been re-arranged for Saturday May 5.
Cleck’s focus now switches to the Yorkshire Cup quarter-final when they entertain fellow North East One side Sheffield on Tuesday, April 17 at 7pm.
The visitors qualified for the last eight when they beat Wheatley Hills at the weekend and the two league games have been close affairs so it promises to be another good game.
There is a good deal of interest in the tie because Cleckheaton feel they can again make a big impact in the county competition after reaching the final a few years ago and being very unlucky to lose.
Sheffield are just above the Moorenders in the table and have experienced a similar mixed campaign so it could prove to be a very close contest.
Cleckheaton won 27-18 at Moorend but lost 10-3 at Abbeydale Park.
An extended run in the cup would give a real lift to the closing weeks of the season and add considerable interest in the club.
The competition has dipped in the list of priorities in recent years since the advent of league rugby but the Yorkshire Cup remains a much-prized trophy and Cleckheaton would certainly be proud to have their name on T’owd Tin Pot.
The Moorenders, who have suffered from injuries of late, should be boosted in the pack by the return of Ryan Piercy, whose absence has been felt in the past couple of weeks.
It is also hoped that Joe Goiti will have benefited from the enforced lay-off and he should be ready to play the full 80 minutes.
Winger Lee Queeley will be back and is available for the rest of the campaign and it is hoped that Johnno Marshall will also be fit to return.
Before the postponement was announced, Cleckheaton had prepared for an improvement on their home performance against Team Northumbria when they allowed a comfortable half-time lead to slip and had to settle for a surprise and disappointing draw.
