Dewsbury and Batley Referees Society celebrates successful campaign

The Dewsbury and Batley Rugby League Referee’s Society celebrated another successful year.

President Jamie Leahy told the annual meeting that the society remains one of the strongest in the country.

The impressive list of appointments for Dewsbury and Batley referees included the international matches between England v France and England v New Zealand, along with amateur internationals, 2015 World Club Challenge Series, Super League Grand Final,Challenge Cup Final and Champions Schools Final.

Other competitions which Dewsbury and Batley members have officiated include the RL Conference and National Conference League, Yorkshire Men’s League, Pennine League, National Youth League, Yorkshire Junior League and Heavy Woollen Cup.

Guest Robert Hicks explained how he became a full time match official and reported on his recent experience of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro for the Steve Prescott Foundation, including refereeing a game of rugby league played at an altitude of 18,000 feet.

Mr Hicks presented Liam Rush with the Bill Barker Trophy (Junior Referee of the Year), Jack Broadbent with the Rex Milner Trophy (Most improved Referee of the Year), Simon Ellis with the Referee of The Year Trophy and Louise Rush with the Len Thompson Trophy (Clubman of the Year).

Any aspiring referees who would like information about getting involved can attend the next Dewsbury and Batley Referee’s Society’s meeting, which will be held at Old Bank WMC in Mirfield on Monday January 23 2016 (7.30pm).
