Dewsbury set to stage homecoming for boxing duo

Professional boxing looks set to return to Dewsbury for the first time in 12 years this summer after promoter Steve Wood booked a show at the sports centre in June.

Dewsbury staged nine professional shows between 1989 and 2001 but Wood, of VIP Promotions, was determined to give English champion Gary Sykes and rising star Tony Aitcheson a homecoming.

Wood took to Tiwtter on Wednesday night to announce: “No VIP shows in April but a load of fights to sort out, back with a bang in May looks like four shows Manchester, Liverpool, Bolton and the hills.

“Also booked Dewsbury for June so @Boxertony1 (Aitcheson) and @GarySykesBoxer can box at home for first time in their careers.
