Discipline is key to Cleck’s National League campaign

Cleckheaton must quickly improve their on-field discipline if they are to make an impact at the higher level of National League Three North.

Rob Afoa Peterson was one of three Cleckheaton players to spend time in the sin-bin at Firwood last week.

Last week’s eagerly anticipated opener at Waterloo Firwood ended in disappointment as they slipped to a 33-19 defeat.

The Moorenders’ cause was not helped as they received a hat-trick of yellow cards, with Matt Piper, captain Richard Piper and Rob Afoa Peterson all spending time in the sin-bin.

Firwood showed a ruthless streak in capitalising on Cleck’s indiscipline by racing into a 33-5 lead before two late consolation tries gave some respectability to the scoreline.

The trio of yellow cards came on the back of Cleckheaton conceding three penalty tries in their final warm-up game at Huddersfield the previous week.

As Firwood showed, teams at the higher level will punish any indiscretions made by opponents and Cleckheaton must learn quickly.

Cleckheaton welcome Wirral to Moorend tomorrow (ko 3pm) for what will be the first meeting of any kind between the two clubs.
